Business Is Social, How Well Do We Do It?

Last week, I attended at a conference in Florida where I had the pleasure of attending a presentation by Erik Qualman, renowned bestselling author of Socialnomics.

Qualman kicked off his presentation with impact when he rewrote an old adage: “History repeats itself {digitally} because no one listens the first time.”  We’re in an age of digital renaissance where the world is riding the wave of technology.  Every day we are introduced to new and amazing phenomena that become a part of our daily lives and then get upgraded or ousted by better and better technology – all at lightening speed.

I’ve noticed that the Real Estate industry is taking its time in catching up to this crazy new world system.  As individuals, we use the Internet to learn, guide and help us with all sorts of communication tools.  On the other hand, when it comes to our businesses, we’re only just starting to take the leap.

A survey by the Illinois Association of Realtors® in July 2011 gave us the following statistics:

  • The average age of the typical first time homebuyer was 30 years old compared to the average age of the typical repeat buyer which was 42
  • More than half of all buyers in Illinois were first time homebuyers; Illinois first time homebuyers were a higher percentage in comparison to U.S. stats
  • 22% of purchasers were single females versus 11% single males; this has been a recurring theme if you look at statistics over the past few years
  • Percentage of buyers who used the Internet to assist their search – 93%.

The potential is incredible!  A lot of it is free.  What more could we ask for?

As Qualman said – “The choice is not IF we do Social Media, it’s how well we do it.” Everybody, including your mother and The Vatican is treading through social media.  Which leaves us with the big question – What is the mark we want to leave – our Digital Footprint, if you will?

The presentation was a phenomenal eye opener guiding participants to several effective and impacting social media tools like Facebook Connect, HootSuite, Google and all its goodies and so much more!  Keep an eye on Ryan Hill Realty, we’re always updating, moving and shaking as we evolve with this organically-driven digital age.

And finally, what really made me Laugh Out Loud (yes, LOL!) at the presentation was an SNL video entitled, D*** it, my mom is on Facebookfilter.  Check it out: http://bit.ly/oFrcne
