The City of Naperville meets the needs of every type of lifestyle, including a residential airpark community for flying enthusiasts. If you own a plane, the Aero Estates subdivision in Naperville is where you will want to live, meet and play.
For pilots, living near an airport is the ultimate dream: where they can fly at will, enjoy nature, and share their passion for the sky with other aviation buffs they know. A residential airpark, or a fly-in community, is a place that provides pilots with the convenience of having a runway in close proximity to their home, a scenic city OR country view, and other fellow pilots for neighbors. Though not a new concept, airparks were most prevalent post World War II, back when there were thousands of airfields and pilots. Down to several hundred these days, airparks still do exist all around the world – and Naperville, IL is lucky enough to have one of its very own!
Where you can park your plane, not just your car
Instead of enduring the hassle of a busy commercial airport, where TSA lines are long and slow, pilots can fly their own plane as they see fit, if they live at the private airpark community of Naper Aero Estates, in Naperville, IL. First built in 1956, Naper Aero Estates features 120 single-family homes, many of them with private hangars – instead of garages – swimming pools, finished basements, and between 1-2 acres of land. There are 2 runways (at the Naper Aero Club Airport), a pond, the Springbrook Prairie Forest Preserve, and easy access to nearby shopping, golfing, and many other Naperville recreational pursuits around town, making the homes here ideal for vacationing in as well as living in year-round. Aviation buffs can unwind in between their travels by indulging in relaxing walks or hikes throughout the neighborhood, or by hosting parties from their spacious residence, while families can send their children to school in the award-winning Naperville 204 School District.
Let’s go flying!
Next to Aero Estates is the Naper Aero Club Airport, managed by the Naperville Aero Estates Association. In addition to the airport’s 2 runways with two five-foot threshold fences surrounding runways 18 and 27, the airport also has a fuel farm, a self-serve for 100LL AVGAS that accepts credit cards, and tie downs.
As a private, not-for-profit corporation, the airport is fully funded and operated by its members. In 1953, the airport was first organized into what was known as the aero club. Once the Naper Aero Estates community was established, and homes were built, planes then began using the airport in 1957, when the members of the businessmen’s Flying Club (BFC) began meeting at the Naper Aero Club Field at the Naper Aero Clubhouse.
Today, BFC meetings continue to be held at the Naper Aero Clubhouse on a monthly basis. Only up to 45 flying members are allowed to be a part of their exclusive club at a time; together, the BFC currently owns and maintains 3 planes: a 2007 Cessna 172SP, a 1998 Cessna 182S, and a 1999 Cessna 172SP, which are all available for members to use on a first-come, first-serve basis.
